Water connects the atmosphere, land, groundwater, rivers, bays, oceans, plants, wildlife, and people. The water around us is constantly moving through the water cycle — evaporating, forming clouds, falling as rain, moving across or into the ground, and beginning the journey again.

This cycle reminds us that land, atmosphere, and water are not separate systems. What happens in one part of the cycle affects every other part — including the bays and coastal waters surrounding Anna Maria Island.
The sun warms water and turns some of it into water vapor.
Water vapor cools and forms tiny droplets that create clouds.
Water returns to Earth as rain and other forms of precipitation.
Water enters soil, groundwater, rivers, bays, oceans, plants, and surface runoff.

CLEAN WATER STARTS ON LAND
When rain moves across roofs, lawns, driveways, and streets, it can pick up whatever is in its path — and carry it toward storm drains, canals, bays, and coastal waters.
That may include fertilizer, pet waste, litter, oil, pesticides, and other chemicals. None of those belong in our waterways.

Conserving water does not require dramatic lifestyle changes. Small habits repeated every day can add up to real impact.
- Fix leaking faucets and toilets.
- Take shorter showers.
- Turn off the tap while brushing or shaving.
- Run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines.
- Water landscapes only when needed.
- Choose Florida native plants that generally need less supplemental water once established.
